Pontotoc weather: fire danger noon–7 p.m.; weekend rain chances return

Pontotoc County residents face another afternoon of elevated fire danger Monday, Oct. 26, as the National Weather Service in Memphis highlights noon to 7 p.m. across the Mid-South. Its fire-danger statement forecasts relative humidity of 30–35 percent and east to southeast winds up to 10 mph, with dry vegetation helping fires spread.

The Weather Service discourages outdoor burning and activities involving open sparks or flames, and asks that wildfires be reported to local law enforcement. The advisory is a Fire Danger Statement; it is not a Red Flag Warning.

The larger weather pattern offers little immediate relief. Monday morning’s forecast discussion keeps the region dry and warmer than normal through the workweek, with afternoon highs generally in the mid-70s to lower 80s and morning lows in the 40s to mid-50s. Elevated fire-weather concerns are expected to continue at least into midweek. Those temperatures describe the region, rather than a measured reading in Pontotoc.

A Sunday NWS update said most of the Mid-South was facing severe to extreme drought. Rain chances are expected to increase this coming weekend, but the outlook does not establish how much rain Pontotoc will receive or guarantee relief from the drought.

For Halloween plans, the change to watch is the return of rain chances around Saturday, Oct. 31, and into early November. The NWS’s Sunday graphic showed a broader Oct. 31–Nov. 4 outlook leaning toward above-normal precipitation. It is an outlook for a period of days, not a forecast that a particular trick-or-treating hour will be wet.
