NWS flags Friday fire danger in north Mississippi
A cold front expected Friday, Oct. 16, could increase fire danger across north Mississippi, the National Weather Service in Memphis said Tuesday. Gusty winds, dry vegetation and lower humidity are the main concerns.
In its 12:24 p.m. Oct. 13 forecast discussion, the office singled out northern Mississippi and the Mississippi River Delta as areas where little or no soaking rain could leave dry fuels exposed to stronger winds.
The regional forecast calls for sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts above 30 mph ahead of and just behind the front, conditions that could help fires spread.
At the time of that discussion, forecasters said a fire-danger statement might be needed Friday but did not anticipate Red Flag Warnings. They said the outlook could change as humidity forecasts are refined.
The Weather Service’s safety graphic advises avoiding equipment that creates sparks, properly disposing of cigarettes and matches, and observing local burn bans and burn-permit requirements.
Elevated fire danger could continue Saturday, Oct. 17, although winds should ease. Forecasters encouraged monitoring later updates as the late-week conditions come into clearer focus.
