Great ShakeOut earthquake drill set for Thursday, Oct. 15
Pontotoc County residents can join the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, an opportunity to practice what to do when the ground starts shaking.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency encouraged statewide participation in an announcement Tuesday. The exercise is self-led, and MEMA’s preparedness guidance says drills can take place in homes, workplaces, schools and public spaces.
Individuals and organizations can register at shakeout.org to receive information about planning their drill and additional earthquake preparedness tips.
During the drill, participants should practice dropping to the ground, taking cover under a sturdy desk or table if possible, protecting their head and neck, and holding on. In an actual earthquake, stay protected until the shaking stops.
MEMA’s safety guidance also advises people indoors to stay away from windows, glass and objects that could fall. Keep movement to a few steps toward a nearby safe place, and remain inside until shaking has stopped and it is safe to leave.
Those unable to participate Thursday can choose another day for their drill, according to MEMA. Registration and preparedness information are available through the agency’s earthquake resources page.
The agency says Mississippi has experienced shaking from earthquakes in neighboring states, particularly along the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
