Shannon edges Pontotoc 38-35 after fourth-quarter lead changes
Shannon defeated Pontotoc 38-35 in high school football Thursday, October 1, after the teams exchanged leads in the fourth quarter, according to game updates and the final score posted by Pontotoc Athletics.
The Pontotoc Warriors played at the Shannon Red Raiders. The game had been moved to Thursday at 7 p.m. because of inclement weather, Pontotoc Athletics announced before the matchup.
Pontotoc led 7-0 after Courtland Pass connected with Walker Chrestman for a touchdown with 9:09 remaining in the first quarter. Pass later threw a touchdown pass to Chayton Johnson, putting the Warriors ahead 14-6 with 4:34 left in the opening period.
A Pass touchdown run made it 21-12 with 6:05 remaining in the second quarter. Shannon narrowed the score to 21-20 with 1:07 left in that quarter and was ahead 26-21 at the end of the third.
Pass ran for another touchdown and Carter Vineyard added the extra point to give Pontotoc a 28-26 lead with 9:09 left in the fourth. Shannon answered with a long touchdown run and led 32-28 at the 7:23 mark.
Kyan Roberson then ran for a touchdown that put Pontotoc ahead 35-32 with 3:24 remaining. That was a live score, not the final result: the final update listed Shannon as the 38-35 winner.
Pontotoc Athletics reported that the Warriors were 4-1 and would host West Point the following week.
Correction, October 2: An earlier version used the wrong nickname for Shannon, attributed Pontotoc’s record and next opponent to Shannon, and listed the game as Friday. The report has been corrected and expanded using the linked game updates.
