Prolonged Heat Wave Continues Across the Mid-South

A prolonged heat wave is affecting the Mid-South, with temperatures and heat indices reaching dangerous levels, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.

Extreme Heat Warnings, indicated in magenta, are in effect for areas where heat indices exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat Advisories, shown in orange, are in effect for regions with heat indices above 105 degrees. These alerts are scheduled to remain in place through 8 p.m. Sunday, but officials expect they may be extended into early next week.

In some areas, maximum heat index values could reach as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit, including in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The weather service emphasizes critical safety tips, such as taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and limiting outdoor exposure.

Authorities also warn against leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles, and urge residents to stay hydrated and wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. The weather service recommends checking on vulnerable family members and neighbors to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Officials advise residents to monitor detailed forecasts and heat index projections for their communities through next Wednesday, as the heat wave continues to pose health risks across the region.
