National Weather Service Memphis Introduces Probabilistic HeatRisk Forecasts for Summer

The National Weather Service in Memphis has launched a new feature for the summer: probabilistic HeatRisk forecasts. The update provides additional context alongside the five existing HeatRisk categories, which range from Little/None to Extreme.

According to the NWS, this new tool allows users to determine the likelihood of HeatRisk levels reaching or exceeding specific categories. For example, if an outdoor event is planned when the forecast indicates a Moderate risk, users can check the probability of it escalating to a Major risk. By selecting the Major category on the forecast map, users can see the chance of an upgrade to that level.

Users can zoom in on their location to view detailed weekly HeatRisk forecasts and probability graphs. Clicking on their area provides a pop-up with more specific information, helping residents make informed decisions about outdoor activities and safety measures.
