Heat advisory issued as severe storms possible in West Tennessee

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued an Excessive Heat Warning and a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. Thursday to 8 p.m. Friday, citing dangerously high temperatures across the region.

Forecasters expect heat indices to reach between 105 and 112 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon. Lows overnight are forecast to remain muggy, around 80 degrees, with little relief from the heat, according to the weather service.

In addition to the heat, there is a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms this evening, primarily affecting West Tennessee and the Missouri Bootheel. The main threat from thunderstorms will be damaging winds, the weather service said.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, take breaks in air-conditioned environments, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. The weather service recommends staying alert for weather alerts and having a way to receive notifications during the evening hours.
