Experts recommend window coverings to reduce home heat gain

Many homes experience increased indoor temperatures due to heat entering through windows, especially during the hottest parts of the day, typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to energy experts.

To combat this, homeowners are advised to close blinds and curtains during peak sunlight hours. Light-colored or reflective window treatments are most effective, acting like sunglasses for the home, experts say. These measures can block up to 77% of the sun’s energy from heating interior spaces.

For homes with single-pane windows, upgrading or adding weather stripping can help keep cool air inside and hot air outside. These improvements can enhance home comfort and reduce energy costs during the summer months, officials note.

Energy efficiency advocates recommend combining window treatments with other measures to prepare homes for summer heat and reduce reliance on air conditioning. Proper insulation and sealing leaks are also part of comprehensive strategies to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.
