Dry Conditions Raise Fire Risk Across the Mid-South

Dry conditions persist across the Mid-South, with relative humidity ranging from 20 to 25 percent, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis. These low humidity levels heighten the risk of wildfires, especially with ongoing drought conditions and drying fuels.

Some fires are intentionally set, while others are unplanned. The GOES satellite can detect heat signatures from fires from 22,000 miles in space, helping authorities monitor hotspots in real time. An example from this afternoon shows a fire captured from space over Arkansas.
