Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse Set for August 27-28, 2026

A deep partial lunar eclipse will occur overnight Thursday into Friday, according to NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio. The eclipse begins at 9:34 p.m. Central Daylight Time and reaches maximum coverage at 11:13 p.m. CDT, when about 96% of the Moon’s surface will be within Earth’s shadow.

Observers across most of the Mid-South are expected to have good viewing conditions, though clouds may obscure some areas in northeast Mississippi, NASA said. The eclipse will be visible throughout the evening and early morning hours in the Americas.

The Moon will pass into Earth’s umbra, the darkest part of its shadow, with the peak occurring at 4:13 a.m. Universal Time. At that time, approximately 96.3% of the Moon’s disk will be covered, producing a notably deep partial eclipse. The event is part of a series of celestial phenomena visible to sky-watchers in the region.
