Construction sites pose electrical hazards despite excitement of projects

Construction projects often bring enthusiasm and progress, but they also present significant electrical hazards, according to safety authorities. During Electrical Safety Month, officials urge workers, contractors, and members to prioritize electrical safety on job sites.

One key recommendation is to always call 811 before digging to locate underground lines, which can be just as dangerous as overhead wires. Safety experts emphasize the importance of maintaining at least 10 feet of clearance between equipment such as boom trucks, backhoes, or dump trucks and power lines.

If a vehicle contacts a power line, workers should remain inside the cab, call 911 immediately, and warn others to stay back. Additionally, crews should be briefed on the locations of overhead power lines before starting work to prevent accidental contact.

Safety officials stress that awareness and proper planning are essential to prevent electrical injuries on construction sites. Following these precautions helps ensure a safer environment for all workers involved.
