Mississippi Opens Storm Shelters Ahead of Severe Weather Forecast

Storm shelters have been set up in Ecru as the entire state of Mississippi prepares for severe weather starting Sunday evening. The threat is expected to last into early Monday morning, according to weather alerts.

Shelters are located at 176 Main Street behind the Fire Department (please do not block fire department doors), Blake Mounce Park at 154 Central Avenue, and Cairo Baptist Church at 2610 Cairo Road, officials said. Residents are advised to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to identify their safe place in case of emergency.

The National Weather Service warns that Mississippi could experience severe storms, damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail up to quarter size, and the possibility of tornadoes. Authorities urge residents to stay weather-aware and prepared for the potential impacts.
