University of Mississippi Medical Center student-led choir uses music for healing

When words and medicine fall short, music can provide comfort and healing. At the University of Mississippi Medical Center, a student-led choir founded by medical student Madison Hansen is bringing therapeutic music into hospital halls and classrooms.

Called Cantus Medici, the choir aims to unite science, art, and community across the campus. Hansen founded the group to explore how music can complement medical treatment and support patient well-being.

The initiative highlights the growing recognition of music’s role in healthcare settings. Hansen and her colleagues hope their work encourages a broader use of music therapy in hospitals and educational programs, according to the university.
