Thunderstorms are often underestimated as a serious weather threat, but they can be deadly, according to weather safety officials.

Strong winds can turn tree branches and loose objects into dangerous projectiles, posing risks to communities. Officials recommend trimming trees and securing outdoor items to minimize hazards.

Lightning strikes can occur up to 10 miles from a storm. People are advised to seek shelter at the first sign of thunder or lightning and remain indoors until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning are heard.
