Safety Tips for Using Alternative Heating Sources During Cold Weather

As temperatures decline, many people rely on alternative heating sources to keep warm. While these methods can be effective, they also pose safety risks, experts warn.

Never use your oven or stove to heat your home. Doing so can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and increase fire hazards, according to fire safety officials. Grills, generators, and camp stoves should be used outside only.

When using space heaters, safety measures are crucial. These include keeping heaters at least three feet from anything flammable, plugging directly into wall outlets without extension cords, turning heaters off when leaving a room or sleeping, and choosing models with auto shut-off features. Fireplaces and wood stoves should undergo annual inspections and proper ventilation.

Fire safety experts also recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home. These precautions help ensure residents stay warm while minimizing risks during the winter months.
