Prepare for Winter Storm: Stock Up and Don’t Forget a Manual Can Opener

The National Weather Service has issued a forecast for a significant winter storm paired with dangerously cold temperatures starting Friday night and continuing through the weekend.

Officials recommend that residents visit grocery stores ahead of the storm to stock up on shelf-stable items in case of power outages or other disruptions. Suggested items include grains such as bread, crackers, and rice cakes; protein sources like canned meats, fish, nuts, and protein bars; and dried or canned fruit and vegetables.

Additional recommended supplies include shelf-stable milk and boxed cheese, bottled or jugs of water, disposable plates and silverware, a manual can opener, a lighter, and batteries. Officials urge residents to prepare now to stay safe during the storm.
