Mississippi under elevated fire danger due to dry, windy conditions
Much of Mississippi is under an elevated fire danger Saturday, according to a fire weather update issued at 6:35 a.m. Saturday. A combination of dry conditions, low humidity, and gusty south winds is creating an environment where fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly, officials say.
The National Weather Service advises residents that even areas not currently under a fire weather watch should remain alert. South winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, are expected to combine with relative humidity dropping into the 20% to 30% range, and possibly lower in some areas. Fuels across the region are drying quickly, increasing the risk of fast-spreading fires.
Authorities urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains to prevent sparks, and refrain from tossing cigarettes outdoors. Any activity that can generate a spark could start a wildfire under these conditions, officials warn.
