Inventors of Modern Home Security System Honored During Black History Month

Marie Van Brittan Brown and Albert L. Brown are credited with inventing the modern home security system in 1966. Brown, a nurse working irregular hours, and her husband, an electronics technician, designed the system to address safety concerns in their Queens neighborhood and slow police response times.

Their invention featured a motorized camera with multiple viewing angles, two-way audio communication, and remote-controlled door locks. They received a patent for their design in 1969, and it has influenced numerous security innovations since then.

The Browns’ groundbreaking work has been cited by 38 other patent applications and is considered a precursor to today’s smart doorbells, security cameras, and connected home systems. Their contributions are celebrated during Black History Month as pioneers in home security technology.
