Digging this spring? Call 811 before you start

Before beginning any digging project this spring, residents are advised to contact 811 at least two business days in advance. The service is free and required by law to prevent damage to underground utility lines.

Whether planting a garden, installing a fence, or other excavation work, every dig — no matter how small — warrants a call to 811, officials say. Striking underground power lines can pose serious safety hazards and lead to costly outages.

Utility companies and safety advocates remind the public that calling 811 helps ensure safe digging practices and can save lives. The message comes ahead of the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, emphasizing caution during spring projects.
